Verna Williams, 96, Fargo, ND, passed away on March 11, 2024 at Eventide Fargo.

Verna Leon Allan was born on August 21, 1927 to parents Everett and Lily (Randle) Allan of rural York, ND. She attended rural one room schools, graduating from Benson County Agricultural and Training School in Maddock, ND in 1945. There she met her forever best friend Walter “Bud” Williams. They married January 16, 1946. They made their home in Maddock. He was the “Standard Oil Man” and she worked at most of the stores in town sometime during her working years, and also in the doctor’s office for Drs. Vigeland and Pollard. They added two children to their family; Faye in 1956, and Scott in 1958 which also added much joy and change. The family moved to Fargo in 1965, Verna stayed home until the children were adjusted, then she worked at Northport Ben Franklin eleven years and the Hospitality Coffee Shop, St. Luke’s Hospital, for seven years, a job she really loved. Bud and Verna retired in 1986, moving to Sibley, ND as the rural living was calling them again. They came back to Fargo in four years because of Bud’s health. He passed away on September 1, 1999. Verna moved to the Trollwood Village apartment complex in 2013. She is survived by her beloved children, Faye and Scott, and many nieces and nephews.

Verna was preceded in death by her loving husband Bud, her parents, all siblings and their spouses: sisters Fern (Edwin) Markestard and Margie (Michael) Pfau, brothers Floyd (Arlene) Allan and Ira (Elvira) Allan, infant siblings Vance and baby boy, and young sister Thyliss Allan.

She felt so blessed for the loving families, all the people she has known through work, Mary/Martha Circle, the quilting groups at church and Trollwood, coffee group at the library and Hope Lutheran Church.

She looked forward to reuniting with those who have gone before to our “forever” home, and to see Jesus who made it possible.

Verna’s family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Eventide for the care and compassion shown to Verna during her final moments.

  1. Faye and Scott- thoughts and prayers are with you both. Verna was a joy to visit. I will miss her. Heaven has added an Angel.

  2. Awww, your sweet, sweet mamma, Verna. Our family LOVED Verna. She lived across the hall at Trollwood from our mom, Evelyn. Oh my goodness, talk about a couple of kindred souls. Not only were they quilting partners, they were partners in crime. Well, not really crime…but certainly goofiness. They dressed up for Halloween together and went trick or treating around the apartments; they shared a Christmas tree together every year (it was Mom’s tree but your mom’s decorations), alternating whose apartment it was to be in; they visited each other daily back and forth across the hall as well as over coffee in the Library; they both celebrated birthdays in August. I can only imagine the “home-greeting” Mom gave Verna when she walked through the Pearly Gates on Monday. Verna was like family to us all and we loved her deeply. Hugs to you both. Love, Muriel

  3. Faye and Scott, our family is sending our heartfelt condolences to you. Verna became part of our chosen family when she moved across the hall from Mom (Evelyn Anderson) at Trollwood and they became best friends. Spending lots of time quilting together, socializing with the Trollwood family, sharing their Christmas tree (one had the tree, the other had the decorations and they would alternate which apartment held the tree each year) and pranking residents at Halloween, they filled their days with fun and friendship. We all loved Verna very much, because who couldn’t love Verna? She was wonderful! Wishing you both comfort and peace upon losing your lovely mom.

  4. If you check the dictionary for the words KIND & NICE, I’m quite sure Vernas picture would be there. What a beautiful lady. We were good friends when she lived at Trollwood. Sincere sympathy to her family. Jean Dybing Nelson

  5. Sympathies to you both Scott and Faye. Always enjoyed being around Verna at family gatherings. She will be missed.

  6. Faye and Scott,
Aunt Verna will be missed by so many. I know she is with Bud and our family that has gone before us. She had such a a kind spirit and lovely soul. Prayers for comfort for both of you.
    Cousin Kim

  7. Dear Faye & Scott-

I have so many fond memories of your folks as a small child those few years growing up in Maddock.
Bud and Verna were both the salt of the earth people. They both loved to tease and both had such a great sense of humor and delighted in making us laugh. Your Mom was like a 2nd Mom to me when we were little running back and forth between , our house at the teacherage and yours, keeping us entertained & making sure we all had great, idyllic childhoods. A few years ago I had a really fun phone call with her reminiscing about fun stories of her youth as well as sharing antics dressing up for Halloween in her senior years. She apparently was always up for a good time.
I know she is having a very happy reunion with your dear Dad, my folks and many beloved friends and family.
May the wonderful memories you have bring you joy and sustain you until you meet again.

    With much love,
    Julie Hansen O’Dwyer

  8. All my aunts and uncles in Maddock were so special to our family. I miss them all. What a nice collection of pictures.
