Remembering the life of Viola Mae Bernstein Viola Mae Bernstein, 92, died February 18, 2021, at the North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon, ND. Viola was born in Forman, ND, where she spent her formative years and loved sharing memories of those days. She attended Concordia College, pursuing art and a teaching degree. After completing two years she accepted a teaching position in Durbin, North Dakota. It was in Durbin that she met and married Daniel Bernstein. After marriage, Viola began her new role as mother and housewife. Viola shared her talents of sewing for many years with family and neighbors and was considered by all as a very talented seamstress. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and expressed her creativity in rug weaving. She was proud to be recognized as “the woman who weaves.” She was very active for many years with the Bonanza Bells of West Fargo, demonstrating her weaving skills at Pioneer Days. As much as she loved her hobbies, she loved being a mother. Viola loved to explore different hobbies and she also encouraged all of her children to do the same with their lives. She fully supported the different directions each of her children took. Viola is survived by her children Lee Bernstein (Rita) of Florence, SD; Mark Bernstein of Walcott, ND; Anita Bernstein of Seattle, WA; Harlan (Nancy) Bernstein of Walcott, ND; Cindy Brown of Blaine, MN; and Faye Bernstein of Minneapolis, MN. She is survived by her grandchildren Annette, Nick, Josie, Daniel, Crystal, Leanne, Russell and Yukitomi. She is also survived by great grandchildren Brooke, Aiden, Savanna and Jakob, a brother Donald Erickson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and other nieces and nephews. We are immensely grateful to the entire staff of the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon. Their amazing care professionals provided limitless comfort to her not only in the past two years but especially so in her last few months. We are also very thankful to Red River Valley Hospice for the care and assistance they proved to both Viola and family in the past weeks during her transition into the next life. She is preceded in death by her husband Daniel; her parents Carl and Myrtle Erickson of Forman; a brother Marvin Erickson; a sister Dorothy Herbst and a daughter Donna Follows the Road. Sorry to hear of Violas passing. What a talented seamstress she was. Enjoyed her when we worked together at Canaan in the kitchen.

Mark…. Buffy and I have such wonderful memories of our time weaving rugs at Bonanzaville with your mom… Deb Pederson and Buffy Pederson
We remember Mae at Bonanzaville and her passion to share her creativity in weaving. Silent movie nights at the Fargo theatre were also a special time with Mae. She will be missed by us all.
