It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Virgil Lloyd Heinen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on October 31, 2025, in his home surrounded by family in Fargo, North Dakota.
Virgil was born on February 16, 1943, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota to Victor and Philomene (LaChapelle) Heinen. He graduated from high school in Detroit Lakes. A proud veteran, Virgil served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 stationed in Germany, and he remained a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), honoring his service to his country. He worked for many years as a carpenter/millwright in the Hillsboro area.
On October 17, 1969, Virgil married JoAnn, and together they celebrated 56 wonderful years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and devoted companionship. He cherished their time together and was a steadfast supporter of JoAnn in all aspects of life.
Virgil found joy in life’s simple pleasures, embracing the great outdoors through camping, fishing, and gardening. He also delighted in snowmobiling and fixing cars, but mostly spending time with his grandchildren, enriching their lives with wisdom, laughter, and love.
Virgil is survived by his wife, JoAnn Heinen; his daughter, Cate Heinen of Fargo; and his sons, Trevor Heinen of West Fargo, Mitch Heinen of Fargo, and Paul Heinen of Amenia. He was a proud grandfather to over seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Victor Heinen; his mother, Philomene (LaChapelle) Heinen; and two brothers and two sisters.
