Virgil Hans, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2023, in West Fargo, ND. Virgil was born on March 25, 1932, to Clem and Adeline (Buchholtz) Hans. Virgil was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will be dearly missed.

He went to Plath Country School before going onto Davenport School, graduating in 1950. In June of 1953, he married the love of his life, Dorothea (Heuer). Together they lived on the Hans family farm outside of Davenport, ND. He farmed for almost his entire life – first with his father, and then on his own following his father’s passing.

Virgil and Dorothea had three children, Dean, Roberta (Hudson), and Neil. They also took Daniel Heuer (Dorothea’s younger brother) under their wings, who became an important member of the family. Virgil loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with his seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Virgil was a devout Christian and active congregant at the Canaan Moravian Church of Davenport serving as a youth advisor, Sunday school teacher, Confirmation Guardian Angel (for Elizabeth Saewert), church board member, and cemetery board member. He was also an active member of the Davenport community, serving on the Davenport School Board and Addison Township Board.

Virgil was an avid farm toy collector. He enjoyed traveling to toy shows to sell toys he repaired and to buy new toys. He also collected clever sayings, riddles, and mechanical puzzles that he loved to try and stump his grandchildren with.

He lived on the family farm outside of Davenport, ND his entire life until 2020 when Virgil and Dorothea moved to West Fargo, ND. His son Neil, Heather, and family now live and continue the Hans legacy on the family farm.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Dorothea; children, Neil (Heather), and Roberta; seven grandchildren, Hope (Matt), Travis (Asialynn), Vanessa, Faith, Caitlin, Aidan, and Dylan; five great grandchildren; Micah, Audrey, Emmett, Genevieve, and Seraphina; sister, Shirley Janssen (Darrell); and many nieces and nephews.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Adeline; his sister Carolyn Mische (Lowaine); and son, Dean.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Deepest sympathies on the passing of a dear husband, father, grandfather…. Precious memories were made with this man.

  2. My deepest sympathies to Dorothea and family. Virgil was a kind soul and I always enjoyed our visits when we would run into each other.

  3. Dorothea (DOTS) and family.

I always remember staying at your farm with Danny when we hunted pigeons together. That had to be in the early 50’s. Of course, I remember the double weddings because you were our next-door neighbor. I still call Danny several times a year. It was nice to visit with Virgil and you at the Davenport School reunion. I am still waiting on Danny to send me a picture of his sister Debbie.

At least you got to share many years with Virgil. Thinking of you and your family during this difficult time.

  4. I always enjoyed Virgil, he was a card. He set up at the farm toy shows in the area. He was a good guy, and he will be missed.
    Rest in total peace.

  5. Rest in peace Virgil!! You were an awesome cousin and always came to all our family functions! You will be missed!

  6. Sorry to hear this sad news , I got to know Virgil many years ago at a farm toy show , was out to see him a few times to get some parts from him , always enjoyed visiting and joking around with him

  7. Just found out that Virgil had passed away. So sorry for your loss. I met Virgil at Dyersville at the National Farm Toy Show. Over the years I communicated with Virgil many times and he bought many Minneapolis Moline pencils and pens from me. Was always good to hear from him. My deepest sympathies.
