Walter R. Botnen, 88, Fargo, formerly Bismarck, ND died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008 in Fargo. Walter was born on July 1, 1919 to William and Rachel (Skaare) Botnen on a farm near Tuttle, North Dakota. He grew up on the farm. As a teenager he worked for the CCC in Idaho on highway projects by the Snake River. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 serving in Europe. After discharge, he moved to Steele, North Dakota. He married Esther Roemmich on January 25, 1948 in Jamestown, North Dakota. They made their home in Steele, where Walter owned and operated a service station. He was recalled to the Military and served during the Korean War. In 1952 the couple moved to Bismarck, North Dakota where Walter began working as part of the striping crew for the State Highway Department. After 33 years, he retired as Superintendent of Maintenance. Esther died in 1999. Walter moved to Fargo in November of 2004 and resided at Riverview Place. Walter died at Villa Maria after a brief illness. Walter was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks, AmVets, Mason, Sons of Norway and the McCabe Methodist Church all of Bismarck, North Dakota. Walter loved his grandchildren, sports and reading about military history. Walter is survived by his two children; daughter, Barbara (Mark) Bibelheimer of Fargo; son, Ralph (Kay) Botnen of Fargo; five grandchildren, Kia Bibelheimer (Larry) Ullrich, Jay Bibelheimer, Nick Botnen, Mitch Botnen, and Amy Botnen; two great- grandchildren, Alexandra Esther Ullrich and Mason Robert Ullrich; one sister, Beverly Anderson of Valley City, ND. He was preceded in death by his wife; infant daughter Kim; his parents; 4 brothers; 3 sisters. VISITATION: One hour prior to the service at Riverview Place.
