Wilhelm Heinrich (Bill) Daul born Sept 29, 1933 in Fargo, ND. to parents Anton and Anna (Holtzer)Daul immigrants to Fargo from Baden Baden, Germany.

He passed away at Sanford Hospice House on November 3, 2022. In the past weeks, Bill was surrounded by family and friends. Their love and support was very much appreciated. The excellent care provided by the Hospice House staff made his last day’s comfortable and peaceful.

Bill was a life long resident of Fargo. He attended Agassiz School and graduated from Central High School in 1951.

He served in the US Navy during the Korean War and although he didn’t talk much about his service he appreciated and took part in Veterans Day programs by Riverview Place and the Fargo South Band program over the years.

In 1958, Bill joined the Fargo Fire Department and was a Firefighter for 35 years. He kept in touch with colleagues from the fire department, going to breakfast with them each month up until his death.

Bill operated his own lawn care and snow removal business for over 60 years. He was a hard worker and loved to work outdoors. He finally put his Toro mower to rest when he was 85 years of age. Many of his clients lived in historic homes in town. He also cared for the Fargo Hebrew Congregation Cemetery and Beth El Cemetery in Fargo for the duration of his career.

He met Marlene Presseller at a dance in 1959 and asked her to marry him three months later. They were married at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud, MN. They were proud to be charter members of Nativity Catholic Church in Fargo.

Bill and Marlene were married for 49 years before she passed in 2010. He remained dedicated to her and waited for the day they would meet again. Together they raised 4 children.

Faith and family were very important to Bill. He offered constant support and encouragement to his children and was a proud and loving Papa to his grandchildren. Bill was a firm believer in eternal life.

He enjoyed visiting with friends, relatives and people he had just met. He loved to joke and tease and had a wry sense of humor. Bill was an avid walker and when his legs grew weak he switched to stationary biking.

Bill was a walking history book of the area. He loved sharing bits of information about Fargo and the people that lived here over the years.

Just last year, he moved from his home of 62 years to Riverview Place where he met many new friends. He enjoyed playing Pinochle and made it his mission to visit with his new neighbors.

He is survived by his children and grandchildren: Leola Daul, Jennifer Daul and her children; Marie Wulff, Cecelia Daul-Wulff and Justine Wulff; Melissa (Victor) Youngs and their children; David, Julia and Geoffrey; David (Meredith) Daul and their children; Browdie, Jonah and Chloe.

Sisters-in-law:
Betty Mische, Susanna Presseller, Sharon Sunstrom. Brothers-in-law: Paul Presseller and Jerry Presseller(Patti) and many nieces and nephews.

And his beloved dog Susie Q.

He was preceded in death by his parents Anton and Anna; his wife Marlene; his brother and sister-in- law, Herbert and Catherine Daul; and his son-in-law Scott Wulff; sister-in-law Jeannie Presseller; brothers in law Gene Mische and Wayne Goldade.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity you believe in. If it’s something you care about, it would make Bill smile to have a contribution made in his memory.

Guestbook

  1. I would like to express my Sincere Sympathy to the family of Bill Daul. I never met any of you, but used to be a frien of Bill and Marlene thru our St. Anthonys Youth Club. I went to their wedding in St. Cloud with 5 other friends. When we got to St. Cloud we asked at a Service Station “Where is the Catholic Church and the attendant said, which one, there are about 8. We said the one with a weddinf today and they directed us to the Church and the 6 of us were seated up front and whent the wedding parth entered the Churchm we realized that we were at the wrong wedding. We ultimately came to the right wedding when it was almost over.. I moved to Pierre,SD 51 years ago, but remember Bill and Marlene well. Marlene had very nice parents. Matt Schatz

  2. Prayers and cares for your family as you wrap your hearts in the beloved memories to add comfort and peace at this time & forever. He will be at peace at his Heavenly home with the Lord and Marlene (known to us at Head Start as Mrs. Clause).

  3. I used to visit with Bill as he would walk Susie each day. Sometimes we would talk for an hour. It was always hard for him to end the conversation and go on his way. I always made sure I gave him the time he needed. I missed his visits after he couldn’t get around as well. Sometimes he would stop by in his car. Miss you Bill.

    • Thank you for sharing John. This is Lola , Bill’s oldest daughter. He loved walking Susie around the block and visiting! I have Suzie with me now. She is a sweetie. Thanks for talking time to visit with Dad.

  4. Both Bill and Marlene befriended me when I joined Nativity Catholic Church in Fargo. We spent many fun times with parish events and at meals at each other’s homes and at local restaurants. I treasured the times when I could return to Fargo in recent decades, and Bill and I always got together to share a meal, memories, and laughs–also, to solve the problems of the world–if only the world would listen to us!
Bill and I spoke by phone of times each year to get caught up and, in the last couple of months, I was happy that this could happen. I miss Marlene and I will miss Bill. Our faith teaches us that those who have gone before us have not really left, but rather we are going to them.

  5. Bill will be truly missed at Nativity. We always had the most interesting visits over coffee or even in the hallways of Nativity, parking lot, or anywhere else we met up. He was a great person. “May the Angels Welcome Him to Paradise.”
    Leonard and Inez Rath

  6. Dear Lola, so very sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. May memories of happy times help you through this difficult time. Hugs being sent to you!

  7. We truly enjoyed being one of Bill’s neighbors for the past 7 years. We had so many talks and I got to give Susie Q many good scratches and pets. We’ve missed him (and Susie Q) so much since he moved and I can’t go on my walks past his house without getting a little choked up. His sense of humor, words of advice and complete interest in your day will be missed. Such a special man. Glad he was in our lives. Sending sympathy and prayers to his family.

  8. Leola, Jenny and Missy. On behalf of the Harrison family, we are so sorry for your loss. We have known all of you for such a long time from South High swim team and most recently my many conversations with your Dad at the mall during our walking out there. He was always asking about my family and was always genuinely interested in what was going on with them. And, of course, we kept in touch through Leola and your faithful service to feeding people in our community. He was so proud of the three of you and his grandchildren. Blessed be his memory. Jan, Fraser, Lori & Lisa.

  9. My dad, Fred Saefke was the fire chief when Bill was hired. At that time the test was “can you climb a ladder”! Bill and I had many laughs about that over the years. My deepest sympathy.

  10. Bill was a gentleman. I met Bill walking at West Acres. I always enjoyed talking with him. We often talked about the Fire Department and the many other city employees we both knew, and I can’t forget about Suzie. My wife, Mary also met him walking at West Acres. We both thought the world of him. Bill knew many people. It was always interesting when he would talk about his yard mowing & snow blowing career on the large homes on 8th Street South.

  11. We send our deepest sympathies to all of Bill’s family. There are many fond memories from over the 47 years we had been neighbors and friends.
In recent years, we had many fun summer afternoon visits in our front yard sometimes for hours before we knew it. Bill was a very knowledgeable, intelligent guy who was filled with wisdom along with being so very kind. We shared lots of laughter. Thankful for such good friends in Bill and Marlene and they raised such good children who have a special place in our hearts too. Our children remember Bill and Marlene with great fondness as well. Wonderful folks..

  12. Missy and family, I always loved running into your dad. I enjoyed our conversations about The Forum and WDAY. If he hadn’t been a firefighter he could have been a newsman. Sending love. Tracy

  13. Missy, Jenny, David & Leola, and families,
My prayers and sympathies are with you as you lay your father to rest. I wii miss being with you back at Nativity today where both of your parents devoted so much of their time and talents. Bill and Marlene made a big impact on my personal development. Being invited into their home was always a pleasure. They were so welcoming and the conversation was lively. With sympathy, Renelda Hushka
