William David Drummond, 91, passed away Saturday December 27, 2014 in WCA Hospital, Jamestown NY. Funeral and visitation arrangements are pending.
Bill was born September 19, 1923 in Roseglen near Garrison, ND to Winifred (Keyes) and William Drummond. Bill grew up working on the family farm and attended school in Oberon, ND graduating as the class valedictorian and playing on the 1941 state tournament basketball team. He attended North Dakota State University, graduating in 1950 with a BS in Agriculture. He would later receive his Masters Degree in Agronomy also from NDSU. On July 15, 1951 he married Phyllis Domek in Montpelier, ND. Bill worked as the county agent at large for Benson County and farmed until moving to Carson, ND to be the Grant County extension agent. In 1960, the family moved to Lakota, ND where Bill was the Nelson County extension agent. In 1966, Bill started work in Grafton, WI with the Malting Barley Improvement Association until the family moved back to Jamestown, ND in 1976 where Bill worked as the Area Extension Agronomist directing a five county- interstate Wild Oats integrated pest management program. In 1983, Bill started work as the first director of the North Dakota Barley Council in Fargo. He served as the director until his retirement in 1993. In the course of his career, Bill made many contributions to agriculture and specifically to barley improvement and development. To acknowledge this contribution, Drummond barley was named in honor of Bill. This six-row malting barley was released in 2000 and approved for malting by AMBA in 2001.
Bill is survived by his daughters: Annette (Andrew Pope) Drummond, Russell PA; Susan (Randall) Zondag, Perry OH; Nancy (Frank) Rose, Hillsboro OR and Janet (Michael Gehrt) Drummond, St Paul, MN as well as eight grandchildren: Valerie (Chris Tafoya) Rose, Jennifer (Scott Emerick) Zondag, Adam Rose, Steven Zondag, Christopher (Charlotte Putney) Pope, Ryan (Kimberly Dickheiser) Rose, Karen (Kyle Atkins) Zondag and Rachel Pope. He has three great grandchildren: Lillian, Katelyn and Nicholas Emerick as well as sisters-in-law Marie (Donald) Olson, Montpelier ND and Gladys (Anthony) Casey, Cottage Grove MN and brother-in-law Marvin Tokach, Jamestown ND plus numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, sisters Eleanor Drummond and Harriet (Roger) Piehl, sister-in-law Arlyss (Domek) Tokach and brother-in-law Roger Piehl.
