William was born on July 8, 1936, the son of Albert and Goldie (Walters) Schlichting in Edgeley, ND. He moved with his parents as a child to Lamoure, ND, where he grew up and attended school. Bill entered the National Guard at the age of 16 and enlisted in the Army at age 17, during the Korean War, where he was with a combat Engineering Unit. After his tour of duty, he returned to North Dakota where he worked for the United States Government as a Geographic Surveyor in the Lamoure area. He later moved to West Fargo – where he was employed at Gold Label Feeds, Jackson Construction, and Massey Fergusson; Jamestown – where he was employed by the State Highway Department and Lipside Construction; and West Fargo – where he worked on the construction of the transmission power line from the Garrison Dam. His longest time employer was at North Dakota State University in the Maintenance Department since 1978, from which he retired.
During his retirement, Bill took great pride in being able to serve on the Fargo VFW and American Legion Honor Guards. He provided Military Honors for many of his fellow soldiers with whom he served. Bill was proud of his service to his country and proud to honor those veterans through his color guard service. He also enjoyed traveling to many different states including Indiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Florida, Wyoming, Wisconsin, and Tennessee. It was his dream to see all of his sons serve their county in the armed forces.
William was a faithful man of God and was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Fargo. He enjoyed visiting different churches in the area and sharing his Faith through testimonies.
William is survived by children – Douglas, Vernon, James, and William; grandchildren and great grandchildren; and several friends and family members.

I just saw Bill’s obituary. I’m sorry I missed his funeral. Bill was very good friends with my mother in law, Eunice Stensland up until she passed away in 2016. Ruth Stensland
