Zelda Elaine Schafer was born November 10, 1931, to John (Jack) and Belle (Jane Arabella Moore) Schafer at Calvin, ND. She graduated from Calvin in 1949 and furthered her education at Minot Teachers College, majoring in English and Library Science. Zelda married Ervin Rinas in 1952. To this marriage six children were born. They lived south of Egeland on the family homestead and later resided in Egeland. She was the office manager for Rinas Elevator and a member of the Cando Lutheran Church. She was active in the church and community, participating as a school board member and school treasurer. She was an avid sports fan, especially of the Phoenix Suns. When it came to farming, combining was her favorite (although in heaven, she is operating a computer driven combine while watching the Suns.) She loved picnicking with the Schafer cousins at the lake. She enjoyed painting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and raising a large garden.
Zelda is survived by her children: Lynnette (Steven) Berg of Fargo, ND; Paul (Jeannine) Rinas of Sun City, AZ; Ron (Jeannell) Rinas of Owasso, OK; Renae (Kelly) Westby of Devils Lake, ND; Ross (Christina) Rinas of Coos Bay, OR; and Joleen Rinas of Fargo, ND; sister-in-law Edith Rinas Nabity of Omaha, NE; sixteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Zelda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brothers Edwin (Lois), Earle (Wanelda), Jack, sister-in-law Ruth (Dick Smith), brothers-in-law Frank Nabity and Arno Rinas and Marilyn Rinas.

Thoughts and prayers for your family.
Thank your for your support and prayers during this time
I recently started work at Maple View and one of my earliest acquaintances was with Zelda.
What a treat for me to get to know her! I was truly sad to see her passing as I was expecting a long term friend while working at Maple View.
I’m from a northern ND farm and loved discussions with one of Zelda and one of her daughters and unfortunately, the time was short for me to know Zelda here on earth.
Through Jesus, we will see each other again, and forever!
Richard, thank you for your kind words and taking the time to get to know her. She truly would have loved to talk all things farm related and would have enjoyed “cultivating” a new friendship.
Thoughts and prayers to all of you. Memories will keep her alive forever,
So true, those cherished memories will keep her alive in our hearts and minds forever. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers .
My deepest sympathy to the family. I worked on many projects at the school with Zelda. She was a go getter and would gets things done. Classy, feisty, beautiful lady. Becky Raddohl
She was a bit feisty at times, but she enjoyed working on those projects with you. And yes, she was a classy, beautiful lady. Thanks for your remembrance Becky.
As a school mate in both Calvin School and Minot Teachers College we had many memories, and also riding back and forth from college on weekends—also the Schafer farm east of Calvin
We enjoyed her stories of growing up and attending school in Calvin. Such as, girls could only play half court basketball…. Thank you for sharing your memories.
My heartfelt sympathy to the Rinas family.
Thank you for your support and kindness.
I remember Zelda as this beautiful, gracious lady who would put on her farming clothes and work hard, alongside all of her family on their farm. My Mom and Dad held both Zelda and her husband, Ervin, in high regard and with the greatest of respect as they interacted in the community of Egeland, the community of Egeland School and the community of Trinity Lutheran Church in Egeland. My condolences to Zelda’s family; she made a difference in many lives.
That was Zelda, dive in, get dirty if need be and get it done. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, it means so much to our family. Those memories make us smile!
Our Christmas card to Aunt Zelda was returned this year and I found that she had passed away on January 24th. To all my cousins and their families, I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. I’m comforted knowing Aunt Zelda was a woman of faith. I know that because she was my Godmother, and the topic of faith was a conversation we had almost every time we saw each other. May God comfort you and be with you all. Love Doug and Pam Rinas
She loved getting Christmas cards, and enjoyed hearing about your family. She was a woman of faith all the way through to the end. It was a privilege for her to have those conversations of faith with you. Thank you for your kind words of sympathy.
So blessed to have had her for an aunt. That twinkle in eyes will never be forgotten. What a reunion they are having in heaven. A life well lived!
So well said! She was so looking forward to reuniting with the brothers and their families. You can hear the laughter here on earth!
