Thomas C. Askland, 89, Fargo passed away Thursday, June 23, 2021 at his home at One Oak Place, Fargo.
Thomas C. Askland was born on October 18, 1931, at Reeder, ND. He attended school at Bucyrus, ND, Richmond, CA, and graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1949. Thomas attended NDSU and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1957. He served in the US Army from 1952-1954 as a combat infantryman with the 2nd Division in Korea. He was discharged as Sergeant First Class with the combat infantryman’s badge and additional medals. He began his Chiropractic practice and career in Wahpeton, ND in 1958. In 1968 he moved to Fargo to join his brother Dr. O.G. Askland, establishing the Askland Chiropractic Clinic.
He served as president of the ND Chiropractic Association and was appointed for a five-year term on the ND State Board of Chiropractic Examiners of which he served 3 years as president. He represented the ND Chiropractic Association as the national legislative representative to Washington, DC for nine years. After 35 years of practice, he retired in December 1993.
Memberships were held at Olivet Lutheran Church, Sons of Norway, American Legion, D.A.V., Fraternal order of Eagles and Rollag Steam Threshers, Vets Center, and One Oak Men’s Club. He was a 20-year member and past president of Southgate Exchange Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mavis, parents Luther and Maylo (Anderson) Askland Wittenberg, one sister Beverly “Bonnie” Stephens, and brother, Dr. O.G. Askland.
He is survived by his sister, Dr. Patrice (Al) Toensing, Tucson, AZ, two daughters, Linda Semanko (Murray), Fargo, Nancy Fischer (Bryan) West Fargo, two grandchildren, Lauren Semanko Bozeman, MT, and Cole Semanko, Fargo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Olivet Radio Fund.

I grew up in Fargo and attended Olivet as a young child when it was back on tenth street south. I also got married in the courtyard at the new site.
My parents were Orville and Mae Nelson. I know Asklands were very well known and it brought back many memories!
I send hugs and gentle thoughts of love, to you his family. May the good Lord grant you peace that your parents are now reunited and back home in the Kingdom with God their Father!

So sorry to hear about the passing of Uncle Tom. Such a sad day. I remember well going to Uncle Tom’s and Auntie Mavis’s house and getting to play pool when I was little. It was always a highlight of the trip to Moorhead and Fargo, and we always had a good laugh as I would scratch after every few shots and he would hold off as long as he could before asking me if I had a girlfriend . . . I was 7 years old. I enjoyed our talks too then and over the years at the family reunions—he was always interested in my travels and generously shared his interests. He will be missed. We send our best wishes and prayers to you all.

Tom was my Chiropractor for many years. Always had a joke to tell and a twinkle in his eye!
Many memories of visits we had through the years at various times and Mitchell family reunions. Rest in peace Tom. Many will miss you. My sincere condolence to the family.
As a child I spent an occasional week in the summer with uncle Tom, and even got to babysit Linda. Tom was always so supportive and encouraged me to become a Chiropractor. My wife Barb and I always looked forward to our visits to the north country to see Tom and listen to a new story. We will miss him greatly and send our sympathy and prayers to the rest of the family.
Linda was my first friend in Fargo when my family (Hans & Lillian Sorensen) moved there from Bismarck when I was 10 years old.. I think our mothers kind of got us together, but it was the most important “mother interference” of my life as it has lasted in a lifelong friendship! Linda and I spent may hours riding our bikes and hanging out at each others home, usually at the Askland’s.
Tom and Mavis were like second parents to me and I learned many things from them. One was the introduction to various restaurants in the F-M area, other than the Ponderosa which my family preferred and I enjoyed, too. They introduced me to Mexican food at Mexican Village; Italian cuisine at The Grotto and The Speak Easy, and so many other eateries. Tom also introduced me to my first taste of a Gin & Tonic, which was often a 5:30 ritual for Tom & Mavis. It was a sip that I didn’t like at all at 13 yrs old. but have learned to appreciate, always remembering my first sip from Tom.
Of course my favorite memories are the several years Tom, Mavis, Linda, Nancy, my parents and myself headed down to the MN State Fair to enjoy all its offerings. And oh the Food Booths we visited and the yearly trip through the Dairy Barn to see the butter busts of the Dairy Princesses! We always went down in two cars and the years after we were 16 yrs old, Linda and I got to drive one of the cars by ourselves. And yes, when it was my turn to drive, I may have gotten mixed-up after we stopped in Fergus Falls for breakfast and took the exit heading back to Fargo.. Linda, always the voice of reason, told me to turn around using the Hwy Patrol ditch crossing ,which I promptly and illegally did. And as we headed back in the correct direction, there were our parents, patiently waiting at the off-ramp to St Paul and Tom was smiling and shaking his head.
I loved Tom Askland and his caring nature and smile ( and he was a good chiropractor too!!). And I have loved to watch his devotion to his family and his church through the years. Linda & Nancy, I share in your loss, but I know that some of the memories of your dad will have you shaking your head; some will have you laughing, and some will bring tears. But all of them, I pray, will bring you comfort and reminders of the Hope we Have for Heaven.
