~ Sanctum~ I built a tiny garden In a corner of my heart And fill it with all that is lovely and bade the rest depart And ever was there music and flowers blossomed fair Yet never was it perfect Until you entered there by Beulah B. Malkin

People around town are asking about you Ricky. As you know the Post Office is the center of activity for a town this size, and me being a mail carrier for years peaks people's curiosity even more. They all heard the sirens that morning. When word got out that it was Lewie Rakosnik's place, people really swarmed the Post Office to find out more. Apparently, they had a 'Life Flight' helicopter waiting for you south of town to rush you to Lincoln if need be. Now as we both know - that wasn't necessary. People ask me if I plan to stay here now. Well, mom and dad moved us here to Wilber in 1966 from the farm in rural Pawnee County. They wanted us kids to grow up in a Czech community. They bought this 'house on the hill' from a widow woman, along with most of her antique furniture. The house has been in the Rakosnik name ever since. I tell people that it's unlikely I ever leave, especially now that you're gone. I've had too many 'loved ones' take their last breath here; both my parents, and now you. So here is probably where I will die as well. Until next time....

Hardly a moment goes by that we don't think of you Ricky. The house feels so empty without you. Rest in Peace my dear friend. Until we meet again....

A week has passed now since you left us Dear Ricky. I spoke with Jed from your work several times since you've been gone. I saw your employment badge laying amongst your things and realized that people at your work place would have no way of knowing where you were or what happened to you, so I called the main office and they patched me through to Jed. I could tell in his voice the surprise he felt when learning of your death. I told him how you would speak kindly of him - which seemed to mean a lot to him. He asked right off about your final arrangments. He said the company wanted to send flowers and words of sympathy in your honor I told him what I knew and offered contact info for Boulger's so that he could follow along that way. He also asked for your mother and sister's contact info so with their premission I gave that to him. I understand that as I am writing this you are still in Omaha. Hopefully you'll be able to return to Fargo soon. Until next time my dear friend. We miss you.

If No One Answers If you knock on my door and no one answers Doesn’t mean I’m not at home I’m probably downstairs doing this or that Or Just busy being alone If you call and I don’t answer Doesn’t mean something’s wrong with my phone I may choose not to talk right then Because I’m busy being alone If you wave to me downtown And I don’t wave back Doesn’t mean I’m mad at you, or anything like that These days my mind is in a million places, and I may not see ‘Cuz I’m just too busy being alone…with me So please don’t be concerned, I’ll be OK You see, the lights went out on me last week And now I’m just trying to find my way It won’t always be like this I’ll be back again someday But for now please understand This is what I need to heal ……at least for today. It's terribly windy here today Rick. Finally got up the gumption to leave home yesterday, went to Crete first time since you've been gone. It felt pretty good for a change. They came to pick up your car Tuesday. Made sure it was cleaned out good. I saved both license plates, one for your Mom and the other for Sue. I'll bring them to North Dakota next week along with the rest of your things when I come to say my final goodbyes. Why does this have to be so hard? I never expected you to go before me. The only solace I get now is knowing you're in a better place. Hopefully I'll be there with you someday too. Miss you man!
